The Mountains of North Carolina are cool. The roads go straight up and then down. My Mercedes SUV used to struggle up the Interstate into Asheville.
Asheville is a really cool town. It is called the Greenwich Village of the South.
One of the best climbs in the US is located in Boone, NC which is not too far from Asheville.
